How to Check New Jersey Property and School Taxes

Reviewed October 2026. The school portion of a New Jersey property-tax bill depends on the municipality, the applicable year’s local budgets, the tax rate and the property’s assessment. A statewide figure or a 2018 news table cannot tell you what one home owes today.

Check the address and tax year

  1. Find the property’s municipality and the tax year on its current bill. Ask the municipal tax collector for the bill and payment status; ask the local assessor or county tax board about the assessed value.
  2. Use the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs property-tax tables for municipal figures in the year available. Confirm the table’s year and columns before comparing places. Statewide or municipal averages are not an individual parcel’s bill.
  3. Read the New Jersey Division of Taxation’s property-tax explanation for how county, municipal and school budget costs contribute to local property taxes and how a general rate applies to assessed value.

The Property Taxpayer Bill of Rights explains how to ask about an assessment and the appeal process. A March 2018 news analysis was the former focus of this URL and remains historical context only; do not use its figures as today’s bill.

For a purchase, compare the property’s current tax bill with the taxes and escrow assumptions in your lender’s written estimate. Ask about any difference before relying on a projected monthly housing payment. See NorthStar Funding’s purchase overview for the rest of the mortgage-planning process. This is general education, not a tax assessment, valuation or loan quote.
